Getting to Cambridge

Cambridge is located 60 miles (approximately 100km) north of London. The nearest airport is London Stansted, which is 50 minutes away by bus and roughly 45 minutes by train, with hourly connections available from the airport terminal. The city is also well connected to Heathrow airport, with National Express Coaches running from Heathrow-Cambridge as well as a convenient rail-link via London Kings Cross station.

By plane

FROM STANSTED

Train to Cambridge

  • Stansted Airport railway station is part of the terminal.
  • Journey time: about 30 minutes. (Note that there are also indirect trains, involving a change at Bishop's Stortford and a longer journey time.)

Bus to Cambridge

  • There is a National Express coach from Stansted Airport to Cambridge (Parkside, Parker's Piece).
  • Coaches leave hourly. Journey time: up to 1 hour.

  • Pre-booking is possible on the website, but tickets can also be bought at Stansted (at a National Express office, or from the bus driver).

FROM HEATHROW

Bus to Cambridge

  • There is a National Express coach directly from Heathrow Airport to Cambridge (Parkside, Parker's Piece).
  • Coaches leave hourly. Allow up to three hours for the journey.

  • Pre-booking is possible on the website, but tickets can also be bought at Heathrow (at a National Express office, or from the bus driver).

Trains to Cambridge

  • EITHER: Take the underground (Piccadilly line) from Heathrow Airport to King's Cross St. Pancras.
  • Journey time: about 1 hour / 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • OR: Take the Heathrow Express train from Heathrow Airport to London Paddington railway station.
  • Journey time: around 15-20 minutes.

  • From London Paddington, take the underground/metro (Hammersmith & City line) to King's Cross St. Pancras.
  • THEN: From King's Cross railway station, take a direct train to Cambridge.
  • Journey time: from 50 mins to 1 hour 40 mins, depending on whether the train is a King's Cross - Cambridge express or a stopping train.

If you are making a return journey in Cambridge (e.g. going both to and from the Computer Laboratory by bus), it is cheapest to buy a "dayrider" ticket.

You can get taxis from the rank outside the station and also from St. Andrews Street, in the city centre.

Bike hire
